"Transforming Education Through Art"           February 2005

Welcome to SKETCHES, Michael Gerrish's WhyART.com newsletter. I offer thoughts to stretch your mind and spur your actions to produce positives for you and those you touch. Author Daniel Pinkwater said, "I believe it is impossible to make sense of life in this world except through art." Artist Francis Bacon said, "The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery." This "talking head" sees truth in both statements; let's start making sense by exploring and expanding the mysteries which surround us!
Art-Whys: The Wisdom in What We Do....
(A Matter of Consequence)

"Art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind born out of struggle between wisdom and madness, between dream and reality in our mind."

"Art does not solve problems but makes us aware of their existence. It opens our eyes to see and our brain to imagine."             Magdalena Abakanowicz

I've been enjoying my job. It seems SO LONG AGO that it was confusing and new and inexplicable and well...even more confusing! Something happened to transform the circumstances; I just don't recall what it was or when it happened. But, it did.

Perhaps it was when I used salt, straws, glue and watercolors to teach an Early Childhood Education class about Sam Francis. Or when I demonstrated the magic of paper marbling using shaving cream and leftover paints. Or, when the Science teacher asked me to talk to his classes about art and global warming and I introduced them all to Lascaux, Environmental Art, Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Whenever it was, it is a reminder that Art IS a matter of great consequence.

Many folks question the wisdom of including the Arts in the core curriculum. But what other subject integrates as seamlessly with language, math, science and history? And, what other subject speaks to the whole of each of us, through movement, intellect, interaction? Being wise means understanding Art-Whys...Do ask, Do tell!

Part Two...

Something remarkable is happening in New York City this month! Imagine a project which transforms a public place, nurtures and protects its setting, cleans up when it is finished, and intentionally pays for itself! We should be so lucky with our assorted governments and corporate "citizens"! Want to find out more? Visit here.

I know I will never learn enough Art History! Perhaps I can make up for it by sharing information about someone you may not know well. This month's star is Walter DeMaria. My first exposure to his work was in New York City, where I viewed organic and inorganic examples of his work.  Google him and you will see a wonderful array of artwork which both grounds and frees humanity to and or from the places we inhabit ...whether they be intellectual, physical, or spiritual.

"The visible is only one aspect or layer of the aesthetic experience, and hence of our existence."                             Michael Govan, speaking about Walter DeMaria's art.
