A Stamp of Approval:
Using Art and Technology to Enhance Self Esteem
- Project Description: Students create postage stamp design using themselves as heroic subject
- Media: Graphic Design Photography, drawing media
- Source Materials: Library books, Post Office handouts
- Tools: Digital camera, computer equipped with scanner, color printer, a variety software
(OFOTO, AppleWorks, etc)
- Characteristics: Integrates Arts and Language Arts
Critique develops/promotes use of descriptive, persuasive language
Statement by artist describing project connects oral and written language
Artists Statement combines Art and interview of artist
Integrates verbal, visual,
kinesthetic and auditory elements
- Benefits:
Provides opportunities to improve communication skills and enhance self image
Promotes positive dialog between peers, staff
Offers students with lower or impeded LA or Art skills another way to show knowledge
or mastery of topic, enhancing self image
Develops critical thinking skills as students decode, analyze, problem solve, etc
- History: The typical student, the typical response, what changes
Introduces a pathway from failure to success
Provides arena for positive feedback, drawing student into learning process
- Project run through from start to finish
Introduction of idea (Its 2095; youre dead! youre on a stamp; why?)
Show examples of stamps from around the world; look for common themes
(there are lots of heroes / ex: H. Tubman, F. Douglass)
Provide guidelines (time frame, steps in task)
Reveal expectations (what must be included, critique process,
etc)
Our format:
-> take photos; create multiple ideas; select one;
-> develop sketch into final product; scan into digital format; edit digitally as needed;
-> interview artists; combine artist photo, statement and art into single document;
-> participate in critique; show it; take project home
